School’s out forever – NOT!

I haven’t studied since high school from where I graduated in 2002 but now I’m going back to school. I failed three courses in high school. Maths A, Maths B and Sign language B. I have no clue how courses are set up in other countries but here it basicly works like this.

1. You read different courses of which all have a number of points. Maths A is the first maths course and is a 100 point one, Maths B is a continuation course of 50 points. You need a minimum of x points (I don’t remember how many) to be qualified to enter a university. Fail courses = less points. Fail enough courses and you’re not qualified.

2. Whatever you plan to study at a university you need grades in Maths A, Swedish A and English A. Fail one of those and you’re not qualified.

Since I failed as many as three courses I don’t have enough points and on top of that I failed a base course. If I ever want to go to a university I have to fix this. So I’m going back to school to study maths. I’m going to Komvux, which is school for adults who need to improve their high school education. Right now I’m kinda nervous since it’s been so long since I went to school and whatever maths I once knew I’ve forgot. My knowledge of mathematics is that of a 13 year old, I kid you not!

One fun thing about going back to school was to buy school stuff today. I felt like a little kid when I picked out a pencil case, notebook, exercise book and some other stuff.

Oh btw, thanks for the replies to my previous post. I’ll take the majorities advice to buy the checkered dress. :)

  1. WOW! To me that seems complicated, but i wasn’t raised in Sweden either. LOL! I’m horrible at math. I have dyscalculia it’s a math learning disability. I hope you do well, and can get in to a university. That would be really cool for you!

  2. Over here in New Zealand, anyone 20 or older can go to uni without having completed high school. It seems strange to me that they make you go back and complete high school before you can go to uni!

But then again, we have to pay for our higher education and you’re lucky enough to have it funded by the government.

    *moves to Sweden*

  3. That doesn’t really sound like a fair system, what if you take a completely different course in college, not even remotely close to anything math, Swedish or English? I already miss school and I just finished a month ago, haha. It’s nice you’re going back though, I think it’s a smart decision!

  4. I really need to study, but eh. I look at it as I can go back whenever. 25 is still young.

When my Mum was 48, she quit her job and went back to study, took up a new career. That’s why I never rushed into studying. She was never happy.

Math, ugh I failed maths all the time. With our scores, you just got a score out of 100 for all your subjects. The perecentage score is your ticket into uni.

  5. Well done for deciding to go back to school, must of been a really hard decision to make – I would of probably chickened out! :P Good luck with it, I’m sure that if you want really hard that you’ll do well! :)

  6. I failed maths all the time… i just studied hard one last time to get into college when I still am. I hope to get into university nest year!

Good choice to go back to school.. i wish you the best of luck!!

  7. Oh, yes, math is evil. I’m having to take college algebra this semester. :( I had to start with beginning then go to intermediate I was so far behind. :( Hopefully it will come back to you quickly. :)

  8. Hi, sorry for doing this, but i am having an affie clearout as some affies never comment me or keep incontact. You may not fall into this catagorie so please do give me a comment. As i know your a wonderful affie! :)

  9. I haven’t taken an math classes for over 2 years now and I don’t think I remembered much of what I learned either. Getting back in the groove of it can be hard but I think it’s worthwhile and that you made the right decision. I wish you the best of luck in your maths class.

It’s pretty cool that you design furniture. You’re definitely the first person I’ve met in the blogging world who does that. I like how you have such a wide variety of images in your gallery.

  10. aww, sorry about failing. i such at math majorily so i know what you mean! the only time i ever passed math with actually doing the work and not cheating was in college, lol ;) school here in america is a little different, especially college wise. evey program has different requirements. for my field, i had to take medical terminology, anatomy and a whole bunch of other stuff. it was hella hard.

buying school stuff is awesome, though. somehow i always end up spending a lot and everything mostly has hello kitty on it, lol. im glad you’re back though. bad wordpress for being done, bad bad. lol.

    xoxo

  11. Men hej angelica!! länge sen nu, de e anna t här, från skåne. läste om dina matteplaner och fick fina minnen från matte b lektionerna =) Har du inte facebook som alla andra?! hade varit skoj o se dig där! Kramar här nerifrån!

  12. Can’t believe we have this bullshit system. It’s retared and keeping people who are ready and willing to get a good education from getting it.
Germany has a really good system, you can study whatever you want and they don’t care about grades. I wish I knew german ;>

  13. I’m so glad I didn’t need maths to do my univerisity course. I failed it at GCSE and had to retake it three times before I finally got a C grade. Rubbish!

Your system is completely different to ours. I don’t like your system at all lol.

Good luck with the new school anyways. Sounds like you’ve planned it all out so fingers crossed for you.

    Helen-Marie x

  14. Good luck with going back to school.. I think it’s a little harder once you have been out of school for a while, but then when you’re older you’re more conscious of the fact that if you slack off, you’re just wasting your own time, money and effort and you try harder. So who knows, you might be better at everything this time around! :)

  15. My mam did badly in school, so she went back to school to study (after she had 3 kids lol). She then went to university and has been a fully trained nurse for years now.

The system in your country is so different to ours. Good luck with everything!

  16. Going back to school is tough, I’ve forgotten everything, I wonder how I’ll survive. Checkered dress?!? WHERE?!! I’m getting loadsa band tees for my bday.

I love your header btw, and wtf, great site too.

  17. I was thinking about going back to college or uni. but the thought of studing is so scary, i mean im the same as you i finshed school in 2004. scary. haha.

    Take care x

  18. Ouch, sucks about the math thing. I’ve never been good at math, but here in the states it’s easy to get by with the minimum and not have to worry. In that sense, I think our educational system is nothing compared to those in other countries: we can get by with mediocrity.

  19. I wish you the best of luck in your studies. I also have never been good at math. :´( It seems to be a problem for a lot of people. It may take you a little longer than most to get back in the swing of things, but I’m sure all will work out. :D Entering a university in America is quite different. You have a set number of classes you must pass in high school, and your grades in those classes determine how much financial help you get to pay for university. Then you take the crazy ACT exam to see if you’re smart enough to enter a university in the first place…

Shopping for school supplies is always fun for some reason… no matter how many years you have done it! ;)

  20. I have to be honest and say that I still don’t get how the education works in all countries except mine, no matter how hard one tries to explain it to me. I do understand, however, what you’ve written, but not knowing what you take up in high school and all makes me confused.

I also understand how hard it is to go back to school after being away from it for so long. We’re in a similar boat; I’ve been AWOL in my university for the past 2 years, when I should have graduated some time last year. And yes, things I’ve learned have conveniently flown out the window as well.

In most colleges and universities in the Philippines, you only have to have lots of money and a passing mark in the entrance exam, and you’re good to go. Not much, eh?

Never liked Math, but I do good in it, so meh. Good luck with everything. I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it soon anyway. :D Shopping isn’t my thing; I easily get bored, and people think I’m weird because of it. ^_^
