Americans and their re-makes!
This fall the swedish horror movie “Låt den rätte komma in” (Let The Right One In) was realeased and now it’s been announced that there will be an american re-make of it which will be released in 2010. So far I’ve been annoyed with how americans make re-makes of asian movies and now it’s happened to a swedish movie aswell.
I understand why re-makes are being made of old movies or a story that’s popular. I mean, how many movies has been made about Romeo and Juliet? Thirty-tree accoring to IMDb. But re-makes of new movies? What’s up with that? I refuse to believe that americans are that incapable of watching movies which aren’t in their own language. After all, there’s subtitles. The rest of the world watches american subtitled movies all the time.
There’s no need for a re-make of “Låt den rätte komma in”. It’s a good movie which have got good reviews. When the re-make is released many will choose to watch that one instead of the original which is such a shame for the people who made the wonderful original movie.

as an American I answer with this:
the American movie directors and writers clearly have very LITTLE inspiration if any at all to make a decent film. So they go to other countries, get their films and destroy them, why I do not know.
I’ll try an catch the Swedish original before I bother with the American.
Ever since I watched the Japanese Dark Water then the destroyed American version I have virtually given up hope.
This American xenophobia is really a pain in the ass for cineasts. Just because they’re too stupid to read subtitles, they make horrible remakes of great movies. ‘The Ring’ would be a great example, or the Swedish movie ‘Den Osynlige’. I absolutely loved that movie, and I never even dared to watch the American remake because it would just have upset me.
I have to agree that usually hollywood remakes of foreign movies don’t turn out well. One of the exceptions in my opinion is The Grudge. I’ve seen the Japanese version, which makes it a more “real” type event, but I very much enjoyed the remake…but that could be because it was the same director. I’ve seen the original The Eye, but have yet to bring myself to watch the remake. That one did not look like a good one. It’s usually pretty evident by previews if they’re going to be good or not. I’ve heard conflicting opinions on The Ring… but then I never take anyones opinion on horror movies because some people don’t watch them for the sheer fun of being scared and ruin the effect by nitpicking at little things that “could never happen”. I haven’t watched any Swedish movies…I should check out our movie store and see if I can find that one!
haha, thanks. professional is good ok right?
love the playlist —->
Don’t worry, most of the time, hollywood versions suck. They’re remaking new movies with high ratings, actually. Maybe they’re hoping that they’re gonna make a lot of money by remaking good foreign films. This just happened with a Spanish movie I recently watched, which is [REC], and it’s hollywood version is Quarantine. :s
Anyway, I think me and my boyfriend will check out that Swedish version!
As someone who only ever half watches movies, I tend to watch a movie while doing something else. I would really struggle to watch something that was not in my own language, because it would require my full concentration.
Americans can’t read subtitles that’s why! haha
I find it funny that a remake won an oscar the other year, the Departed- I loved the movie but it’s still a remake.. Comon!
Thanks for the wp-spamfree idea, i installed it and so far it’s working great. :]
i love the neutral color scheme. annnd you blog a lot, niiice! i wish i could more.
I’ve heard good things about “Låt den rätte komma in”. It’s sad to think that they’re already remaking it for American audiences. Just goes to show that some Americans are expected to be too lazy to read subtitles or otherwise enjoy a movie that has not been Americanized.
I agree — it’s like a craze! And it’s not even that they contribute anything worth it to the movie — most of the time, the American version is dumbed down and gored up, making it just another crappy “horror” film.
Thanx Im Addinq You Now. Nice Site
Hey Angelica, how are you?
Thanks for accepting me, I’ve added you as well!
Byee!
Remakes and Filipinos go hand in hand. It’s the same with our society. There have been rumors of having a Twilight remake here in our country but good thing they just remained to be rumors :p Haha. A lot of korean stuff have remakes that are being shown in the channels here too. I’m honestly sick and tired of seeing them around. I want something original. Pfft.
I’m American and I also agree at the damned remakings…It’s pathetic and American’s are just too closed-minded into watching the original versions and reading subtitles. How are they supposed to get exposed to global cultures? Americans are jsut gonna get less and less intelligent now.
I watch a lot of Japanese horror and a touch of anime (Sailor Moon… nothing hardcore) and I prefer the Japanese versions over American anyday. America censors… badly.
Apparently “people don’t go to the movies to read.” Yeah, I’ve had some friends actually say that to me. They’re the same lazies who come to me later for homework help. There’s no need to make a point here. :´(
Well America loves Hollywood and most people over there seem to have this unexplained hate for subtitles
Låt den rätte komma in is on imdbs top 250 list (or, at least it was the day before yesterday) and the remake will probably have a rating of around… 6 or worse. That’s what happens to most remakes.
Some remakes aren’t that bad though. Dawn of the dead, hmm..
