How many of you are participating in Earth Hour, turning off your lights for an hour next saturday? I’m not. Why not? Because it’s a ritual which people participate in to feel good about themselves. All of those who usually don’t give a shit about saving energy get to feel good about “doing something”. What difference does it make? It will reduce the carbon dioxide emissions for one day but after one hour people go back to their normal way of life. What we need is long term goals for change. Not just a one hour manifestation.

I recycle, use very little electricity compared to most people, don’t own a car and try to eat as much ecologic, vegetarian* and locally produced food as I can. THAT’S what people should do. Not just turn off the lights for an hour.

* “According to a 2006 United Nations initiative, the livestock industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation worldwide, and modern practices of raising animals for food contributes on a “massive scale” to deforestation[2], air and water pollution, land degradation, loss of topsoil, climate change[3], the overuse of resources including oil and water, and loss of biodiversity. The initiative concluded that “the livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global.” – Wikipedia

I had never even heard of “Earth Hour” prior to right now. I agree with you 100% on this matter. There is NO sense in “lets do it for an hour, one time thing.” It would be more impressive if these folks were able to do one hour, every night, every week, every year.

There are just so many things with today’s world… Quite honestly, I keep saying we’re all fucked and the world is comin’ to an end. With our economy, the environment, society… There are kids getting other kids pregnant at the age of 10 now. OR the fact that we’re cutting thousands of teaching jobs – so our children cannot receive the proper education – setting them up to fail when they’re adults … Which will then in return fail the economy even more because we won’t have anyone that qualifies for the jobs available… I don’t know. I’m very opinionated regarding politics and society as of lately… I’ve been contemplating a vLog regarding the matter. I just don’t know if I can handle seeing/hearing myself on cam – in front of the world.

Very interesting point though. Thanks for sharing that… I hadn’t a clue it even existed.

Well at least you’re doing everything right! The right guy will come along soon enough ;)

I’ve never heard of Earth Hour, but I doubt I’ll be participating. I already do tons of things to conserve energy. I don’t leave lights on when I leave a room (or TVs or computers), we recycle, we don’t leave water running… I think we’re doing fine.

    I agree with you :)
I am a vegetarina and buy all my vegetables and stuff from my local market (which I work on so I know where it all comes from)
:D glad to know that you are reducing your carbon foot print :D
    xxx

Wow. Not bad. It’s a balance between work and play.

What I find most hilarious is that they’re going to let a bunch of fireworks off just before Earth Hour begins where I live to CELEBRATE Earth Hour. Fireworks are disgusting for the environment. I’d like to know where they got their logic from.

I once calculated my carbon footprint and it was much smaller than I expected it to be. It was under the world target! :)

  7. Esme Esme says:

My sister is going to have a party on Saturday, that means we have to turn off the lights. At a party. And she’s having a masquerade bash LOL.
I see what you mean about earth hour… and I agree with you. It should be more of a long-term thing.

  8. Vashael Vashael says:

Not much people are even aware of this Earth Hour in my country and when I heard about it from my dad, I thought it seemed pointless. Turning off your lights for one hour doesn’t really do much for the environment, its just ridiculous.
People should really focus on doing things that would actually help the environment.

  9. Lauren Lauren says:

I agree. People will turn the lights off for an hour then everything will go back to normal. It would be much better to encourage people to get into the habit of turning off appliances everyday when they’re not needed, or make different choices when it comes to food like you have.

  10. Bre Bre says:

Yay for your lifestyle. :] I like it. I want to have some sort of business that’s totally environmentally friendly & creative… haha, what that is, i don’t know yet.

Lol you always make the best points when it comes to economic situations. Youre right of course. It reminds me of the useless attempts at “new years resolutions” that people make. Even I myself am guilty of making them and then not following through. I’d like to think i conserve energy with little to no effort. it just makes sense to turn off all appliances and lights when you’re out of the house. or if youre the only one home & only occupying a small area of your living space. turning off the computer after use saves a lot on energy from what i hear as well

  12. Jhoice Jhoice says:

I don’t eat that much vegies

  13. Anna Anna says:

Yeah I agree, I’m turning of my lights.. But that’s because I won’t be home at that time anyway :P haha.
I eat vegetarian and ecological aswell and recycle all that I can. I’m in a school that recycle so I have too :) but I used to so that’s alright.

  14. Nicolah Nicolah says:

I probably won’t because I never remember. I always forget about stuff like that.

You don’t have to worry about me gambling in Vegas, I’m not a big gambler, lol.

  15. Angie Angie says:

You’re very right, I never participate in temporary things like that because I feel like it would make me a hypocrite. If you’re going to do something make a habit of it.

  16. snez snez says:

I used to be a veg and care about all that stuff. I doubt I’ll start caring again until I have children.
