Sometimes I wish I lived in another time. I guess it’s easy to romanticize past times when life feels boring and lacking in adventures.
I see myself walking in a rose garden with a castle in the background, dressed in a fancy gown. I see myself living in a cottage in the woods, making herb medicines. I see myself riding a carridge down the streets of 17th century London.
It wouldn’t be that great though. Not when I really think about it. I don’t fancy witch processes and the plague. And really, a world without showers, the internet and rock music? Where religion is looked upon as the only truth and women aren’t allowed to vote? No, thank you.
Besides, since I today make pretty much as little money as you can make in Sweden I’d probably be poor in any time. In Sweden today you can be poor and still live a very good life but it wasn’t like that 100 years ago (and still isn’t like that in most countries). It’s not like I’d live in a castle. Well perhaps if I were a maid or something. Living in a cottage in the woods wouldn’t be as idyllic as I picture it either since I’d have to plow the fields and milk the cow. And that carridge ride down the streets of London wouldn’t be too swell since I most likely would be riding home to the slum where I would live, after a hard day of work doing other peoples laundry.
Even if I were rich life wouldn’t be great since dying from the flu at the old age of 30 wouldn’t be an impossibility. Not to mention how I’d probably live in celibacy to avoid getting knocked up and die from child birth. Yikes.
I’ll keep on dreaming about better times but I do know that this time in fact is the best time.

You’re not alone, I wish and wonder about the same thing myself constantly. But then I reason myself out of the thought pretty much like you did.
I start to think of all the medical advances that haven’t been done, the hardships of that lifestyle, society’s views and moralities, etc. But you can’t miss something you don’t know, so that would be the upside to being born in a certain time period.
link exchange for short is a display?
You know I wonder the same thing, when I was born in a past time what would I miss the most? Sometimes I do doubt myself wishing for another lifetime but sometimes what you have now is better than you have previously for example cellphone, old cellphone you have your new one now, so its better, right? No, internet in the old times, I probably died of boredom, haha, and don’t worry if you feel lonely again I’ll be here talking to you:)
Yeah I feel the same way, since I am such a computer addict I often dream of a world with no computers and how great it would be. I actully would give up my computer to live in middle earth
hahaha but I guess I’d give it up for middle earth only.. So I guess I’m fine with living npw, even though living in the 60´s and 70´s would’ve been really cool.
It’s scary how the world changes. And when you look back, especially to 100 years ago, we’ve come so far. I think Im more scared for the future.
I’m so with you! But lately I’ve been dreaming alot like that, haha dreams are so much better than real like sometimes haha
Whenever I catch myself dreaming about living in another century I think of all the uncomfortable things, lol. Though that doesn’t stop me from dreaming about it every now and then, haha.
I do feel like I was born on the wrong year/time. I’ve always wanted to be born in 80’s cos 80’s people are so cool. Everything is cool in the 80’s. It sucks that my parents didn’t make me earlier than I’m supposed to be born. Am I making sense here? lol anyway if we’re talking about centuries. I would probably speaking Spanish as my country were colony of Spain before.
I already added you to my links btw..
I often think about other eras I would prefer to live in; but If I were to live in them, I think I’d prefer to not know so much about the future (internet, tv, cars, etc etc..) but then I wonder if I’d enjoy the past so much without having enjoyed the future.. it’s a very catch22 situation.. I guess it comes down to that whole ‘Grass is always greener on the other side…’ concept.
i couldn’t agree more!! I have actuallly had this conversation multiple times when I watch the older style movies. Like the marie antoinette dresses and the really pretty older hairstyles. Where you talked in the old romaticized english like romeo and juliet and the fields of beautiful flowers and empty land… whereas now its so populated and there is so much STUFF and technology its ridiculous… seems like life would be much easier back then ha
yeah i agree. you know what time period we should live in? a fairy tale life!
hahas that would be sweet though.
take care girl! sorry for the late comment been busy! >:(
Oh same here, Angelica. I’ve also imagined myself in another lifetime but unfortunately, it’s a total failure. Hahaha. My personality suits this century and yes, I can’t live without the techie stuff! I love my internet so much
I’d die without my internet but I’m curious as to how it would have been living in the 60s and attending a university. I’m afraid times prior to that… it’s hard to imagine me in them. It would be interesting to be able to experience it for a short time.
Agreed. Every century brings something special to the table. Some more positive than others. I definetely see a few good reasons to live in another time than our current. ^^
Gilmore Girls, eh? I’m gonna watch Heroes after Lost, I believe. And then I got a tip for a friend to watch Gossip Girl.. I’m a bit unsure about that one though, but who knows? After all I love the O.C. ^^
Yes! Sometimes life from way back then looks some much more nice than the ugly world today. But each has their pros & cons, if you could choose a time period to live in which one would you pick?
You are deffinatelly not alone.. everything now is so.. fast.. you know. You can’t even wear pretty long puffy skirts, because you wouldn’t fit in a bus.. and I use the bus alot. Silly stuff like that. I wish people were corsets an such.. V_V
But at least now we have toilets inside the house!
Sometimes me and my friens make tea partys.. with probably not many people do them now adays.. and we can dress whatever we like..
btw… why don’t you go to alternative parties outside the city where you live?
I agree! I would rather live in the 1700 century than now. And maybe in 200 years people think back and say hmm 2000 was such a great time. But they didn’t have flying cars or could teleport everywhere, How could they live like that? XD
I’ve thought about this alot, especially when I was reading the great and terrible beauty series. It sounds nice, a lot more… simple, I guess. But I wouldn’t want to live in any time but the present. =] No internet? No thanks.
I think that sometimes…but then I remember the internet. How in the world did they live without internet? lol
You just made me hate history that little bit more.
So if life is so much better now, what will it be like in another 100 years?
Will gays finally be allowed to marry? Will marriage become illegal altogether? Will they ban reproduction to wipe out all of man kind for the good of the world?
Ahaha, yes, my mind’s dipped into those thoughts before whenever I read my most-loved historical fiction books. And I, like you, would probably dislike it thoroughly.. like you said, there’s no Internet, no music (with bass and some other), no rights (for us anyhow), etc. What’s good written on paper isn’t always good to have in our lives. Though, it is always interesting to think about things like: “What if I were born in that century?”
History is certainly quite fascinating. =D
I often think about living in another time, as well, but you’re right about all the negative aspects … That’s why I enjoy reading Skye’s blog, hehe: http://www.princessportal.com/
I would want to live in a time where there were fancy gowns. But it’s true, if you lived in that time you would most likely be poor since most people were poor. In some ways you have to be fascinated by history.
I like your imagination! It would be nice to live in that fairytale fantasy with the castles and everything but if i were to live in the past it would be different here in Malaysia. Instead of riding on carriages it would be riding on buffoaoes while ploughing on the paddy fields and living in a wooden cottage with no electricity.
I fancied living in another time as well, but you made me realize the old times really isn’t as good as how we picture it. We’re lucky enough to be born in a century with already much progress around. I’ve become so much dependent on technology and I really think today’s way much better compared to the old times.
