USA isn’t the world

I hate when it’s assumed that American things are universal things. Like A Wikipedia article I read a couple of days ago, written entirely from an American perspective with examples only taken from USA.

Another example is one of those silly IQ tests I took online. It wasn’t a real IQ test, more like a test of how much you know about the world. Still, the problem was that half of the questions were all about USA. So since I didn’t know much about American presidents and such I’m apparently stupid.

But why should I know who the founding fathers were? I live in Sweden. We have our own famous politicians. Not to mention musicians, writers, artists, athletes and actors.

For about twenty-five years I thought Evel Knievel was a Star Wars character. I mean, just listen to the guys name! It really could be a space opera name! I understand that he’s quite a legend in the US but once again, why should I know that? I’m Swedish.

Speaking of USA. Which English do you guys speak and write? American or British? My English is probably a mix of both but in school I was taught British English. It’s hard not to mix in American English though since I no longer study the language but only encounter it online, in movies, music and books. And of course American English is the most common in all of those medias. I still try to use the British words as much as I can though. After all, I’m European.

  1. I use American English, its amazing how someone can be speaking English and I still don’t understand what they’re saying because of their vernacular/accent. I do tend to use a lot of old fashioned words when I’m talking, without even realizing it and I sound like I’m from the 1920′s or something. :D

  2. - just dropping by ;)
My “accent” is more American, probably due to all the tv-shows, music and movies, but I am still being taught British English at school. And my spelling is more British as well with words such as “favourite”, “colour” etc. I blame it on the “u” :/

  3. I totally agree with everything you have said.

I speak British English, because I’m from the UK :P A few years ago I had an American correct my spelling in a LJ comment, because I wasn’t typing in American English! I think he assumed that I was American or something, but it really annoyed me lol.

  4. Agreed!! Man, but i guess it’s the fault of some of my countrymen too, and the media really. because the Americans came here during the WWII, that’s why we Filipinos have this notion that anything American is great. well now of cours it’s lessened, but it’s because is the English universal language. sighs… i’d want to speak in British English though! hehe :D

  5. Wow I wasn’t even sure which language we spoke o.O I think its a mixture of both. But being that I live in Trinidad, its like a whole other form of language. We speak broken english, once I listened to myself speak and it was really funny but even worse when I tried to speak proper. It sounded wrong.
We are highly influenced by the Americans, sometimes the way we talk, and especially the way we dress its all influenced by American entertainment. I’m pretty sure a lot of our culture is lost among teenagers, we’ve adapted to foreign culture >< I. And we’re supposed to have deeper roots with Europe being that we were once a British colony and we’re apart of the British west indies but that isn’t so -_-

  6. I’ve also noticed that my almanacs contained quite a lot of pages about American culture. Isn’t that kind of biased? Not that I’m trying to demean them or anything, but still.. D:

I think I use American English…although British English is fine with me. And because I watched Harry Potter too many times I’ve learned how to use the British accent too (at least, I think I have learned)..

  7. Hehe I know who the founding fathers are.. my god how stupid you are! Kidding kidding! I don’t think that’s even connected to IQ haha! IQ tests are stupid anyway. Don’t prove a thing, just to enlenghten pretend penis. ;)
I use american accent, because I think using brittish sounds so lame.

  8. And you know about Star Wars but not him? I mean what the fuck? Fucking hypocritical vegetarian. Burn in pretend hell.

    “Stephenie Meyer – The Twilight-saga”

The simple fact you’re a fan of that proves that your opinion is worth less than dirt. Good day, sir.
