When I was a teenager it bothered me that the actors depicting teenagers in TV-series always were in their twenties. A show I watched a bit was Dawson’s Creek (I’m not proud of it OK?! >_<) and at the beginning in 1998 they were all supposed to be 16. The youngest of the actors playing the leads was actually 20 and the oldest 27! So here’s a show I’m as a teenager is supposed to identify with but yet they put a 27 year old in it? All it did was create these weird ideals of how to look which obviously were impossible to follow for most teenagers.
Now though, more than ten years later, I look at this in a kind of different way… You see I still enjoy TV-series and movies set in a high school environment. I might be 26 and prefer to watch movies about people my age but I can still appreciate something set in that environment because well, been there done that. I can relate because once upon a time in a not too distant past I was a teenager myself.
Not much have changed in the casting of actors for these series and movies in the past ten years. I have changed though. Now I’m very happy to see someone aged 27 playing a 16 year old because for obvious reasons I prefer to look at 27 year old guys rather than 16 year old kids. Take Glee for example. The character Finn is 16 but the guy who plays Finn, well he’s 27, my age that is. And damn he’s hot! And don’t kill me now Twilight haters but I think Rob Pattison is hot. Well at least in his vampire make-up. So he plays a 17 year old but in actuality he’s 23, not that much younger than me. Great!
I still think they should try to hire actors who are around the age they portray for a more realistic feel but I’m not really complaining any more. I’m glad they did choose Rob Pattison rather than a real seventeen year old.

You know, I always thought it was a bit odd that they always casted people so much older for the roles of teenagers on TV. I remember reading in a magazine when I was about 13 that the guy who played Dawson in Dawson’s Creek (lol, I watched it for a while too!) had to shave twice to three times a day to look like a 15 year old on TV and I wondered at the time why they didn’t just hire a real 15 year old if it was that much trouble! I guess it’s partly because of child labour laws, since in most places kids can’t work a full day on set until they’re 18. But I agree, I’d much rather ogle a hot 27 year old than a guy of 16! And I have a sudden urge to watch Glee now…never seen it before, but I’m on a mission to track down the hotness.
Oh, and Rob Pattinson plays a 17 year old in Twilight? I thought he played a 107 year old! XD Lol sorry, it’s late and I’m over-tired.
IT is not only their age but the way they look.. one 20 year old could got for a 14 year old and another could go for someone who is 30!
I watched (or at least tried too… it was too horrible) the original Lolita movie and the girl there I bet she was like 30.. the one who was supposed to play Lolita.. it was just horrible!
i’ve never really put too much thought into that and just kinda accepted it how it is. it bothers my girlfriend when actors/actresses are cast in teenager roles and they are older (ex: rachel mcadams in mean girls/the hot chick)
as far as robert pattinson goes, he’s great for the edward character. i guess that’s another example of how i’ve never really thought about him looking older than 17 though.
pacey was so hot ahahaha.. i actually think so
dawson creek was pure gold in it’s prime! don’t be ashamed… it’s a classic!
I watched that show too and thought that the characters looked awfully mature for their ages. Dawson definitely did NOT look like he was 16 to me.
Still these days I’m attracted to men about 10 years old than me.
I have thought of that before. Like how they look so old for their age. Sometimes they look younger than the age they’re acting out. I also agree that Rob is a hottie. Lol
that’s very true.. Like Edward of Twilight is 22 already and he is playing 17? haha.. and bella is 18 already yet kristen is 19 going 20. I haven’t watched glee yet, but they said it was all good. Btw, I love your gothic blog. Love everything here..
