Memories of a life gone by

Today while Christmas shopping downtown I got the strongest flashback outside of one of the malls. I thought about a day more than ten years ago when I walked the same way with a friend who I was very close to back then. Since I moved back to Västerås I get these kind of flashbacks often. It’s not things I have forgotten and suddenly remembers, it’s that when I am in a particular place and come to think of memories I have of that place the memories I have of it becomes extremely strong. It’s as though I remember a feeling, how it felt to be the person I was back then, how I felt for the people I knew back then. I almost expect to look down on my clothes and find myself dressed in the skirt I always wore in high school. To look over my shoulder and find my old best friends standing there.

I didn’t miss things in that way when I lived in Hultsfred because it was a completely different place where my teenage years in Västerås felt very distans. Now I’m all of a sudden back at the crime scene, so to speak, and being here I remember all the good times so much more vividly. It’s one thing to think of what you did in high school when you’re sitting in a town 400 Kilometres away and another thing completely when you walk by your old school.

Perhaps I wouldn’t be as melancholic as I am about the past if I had never left Västerås. Now the end of everything that was my life back then came abruptly. I didn’t lose my friends one by one, I lost them all at the same time when I moved. Life as I knew it didn’t slowly change into something else, suddenly I just lived in a small town in Småland where I had never even set foot before.

Now I make it sound like my life is 2011 is shit and my teenage life was the shit. That’s not the case. My life in 2011 is good and I certainly don’t want to be a teenager again. Except for maybe that feeling of having my whole life ahead of me that I had back then, I do miss that. Still, what I do wish is that I could merge my old life with this life. Take the best from both. At least I have reconnected with a few people from before and that’s wonderful. A small piece of my old life in Västerås is part of my new life here too.

Still open for Christmas card exchange btw.

The holiday season

I bought a new TV bench from Media Markt for 500:- (€54 $72). It’s originally from Stilexo and the original price was 1500:- (€163 $217). I got it cheap because Media Markt had used it for displaying their TVs on. Nothing wrong with it, just needs a bit cleaning.

It’s not even December yet and I’m almost done with my Christmas shopping. I’ve bought most of the presents, Christmas cards, wrapping paper and ribbons, a tree and ornaments for it. I want to wrap the presents right now but I’ll have to force myself to wait a while because I prefer to do it closer to Christmas. You see every year I have this cosy night of gift wrapping when I light gingerbread and cinnamon scented candles, listen to Christmas music, drink spiced mulled wine and eat chocolate. And I just feel that it’s too soon to indulge in the holiday spirit like that when it’s not even December yet.

Speaking of Christmas, who wants to trade Christmas cards with me?

And don’t forget to enter my contest where you can win a beautiful gothic necklace or a gift card to a alternative clothes/accessories/home decor web shop! More info here!

Last but not least, I’ve added two new categories to the blog. Beauty & Fashion and My Home. Beauty & Fashion is all the posts which previously were tagged Looks. My Home also used to be a tag but is now a category. Both tags had so many posts that I decided they deserved categories of their own since the tags are supposed to be subcategories. For example posts in the Beauty & Fashion category now have tags such as Clothes, Shoes and Make-up. If you’re looking for specific things this will make it easier to find them.

Online friends and Christmas card exchange

2011 truly was the year of the blog draught. 2010 was pretty bad as well but 2011 was truly horrible up until my return to the blogosphere in October. I promise you that I’m back to stay now though since I have this new found joy when it comes to blogging.

I’m really glad some of my readers have stayed with me and still read my blog even after all my time away from the blogosphere. Most of you who still stops by and comment I’ve known for years now as we’ve followed each others lives through blog entries and online communities. The fact that I have friends all over the world is really cool. I just wish the world wasn’t so big. Having you all nearby would be amazing.

Speaking of online friends, Christmas is almost here and I’d love to exchange Christmas cards with as many of you as possible. Anyone up for it?

I love getting Christmas cards. I love everything about Christmas! Buying gifts, wrapping them, decorating the tree, the Christmas music (Absolute Christmas FTW! (Swedish Christmas CD)), the decorations everywhere, the food, the drinks, the candles, the Christmas movies, everything!

I’ve bought a white Christmas tree and a few sets of ornaments. I’ll probably go with a little more pink than I originally had planned since I can’t find many black and white ornaments. The colour theme will be black, white, pink and silver. Won’t that look awesome? I think so. I bought five of the cupcake ornaments I blogged about a couple of days ago. I’ll probably buy more of them but five was all I could afford at the moment since they were quite pricy. Well at least I think 30 SEK (€3 $4) a piece is pricy.

Man I hope my cats won’t ruin the tree, tip it over, break the ornaments, eat it or whatever. I’ve never had a full sized tree standing on the floor so I’m not sure how they’ll react to it. They’ve been curious of the small trees I’ve had before but I’ve managed to put those in positions not easily reached by the cats, like on top of a book case. Fingers crossed there won’t be a cat vs Christmas tree accident.

Anyway, it’s really late, or early, depending on how you see it. I’m going to continue organizing some stuff while watching Freaky Friday. Yes, that’s the kind of things I do at 5 AM. For some reason I tend to get terribly inspired to do all kinds of things in the middle of the night. Cleaning, organizing, baking, painting and blogging, obviously.

Small space living: How to make it work

My apartment is small and no matter how much I like it sometimes living on such a small space causes problems. I do manage though and I thought I’d share a few tips on how to do so. It’s all about using the space you have wisely.

1: Less Is More. It’s really easy to clutter up a small home since what’s actually not that much stuff tend to look like a whole lot more than it actually is when placed in a small space. What makes it work for me is one simple rule: when something goes in something else goes out. That way of thinking is also a money saver since requiring to throw something old out when buying something new really makes you think twice before spending money on stuff for your home.

2: Buy furniture with a function. Not something which just looks pretty. What’s better, a cute small table on which you can place a vase or a book case for all your movies? Obviously the latter. And speaking of furniture with a function let’s move on to…

3. Two in one furniture. This is furniture that can be used in more ways than one. Take this furniture arrangement for example. The couch is actually a couch bed which can be made into a 150 cm wide bed. Huge space saver there. Really great since I don’t have the space for both a bed and a couch. The long part of the couch can be opened and in there I store my bedding during day and couch pillows during night. The white chest is another piece of furniture in which I can store things.

Before I die

I’d like to recommend a book which has had a profound effect on me. It’s called Before I Die and is written by Jenny Downham. The book follows fictional sixteen year old Tessa’s last months after she finds out the cancer she’s battled for years will ultimately claim her life. This sounds like a really sad story, which it of course it. But, it’s also one of the stories most full of life I have ever read. How can a book about death be full of life you might wonder. It sounds odd. But it is, because instead of lie dying in her bed the Tessa decides to make the most of her last months, to live before she dies.

This is a book to read if you’re feeling down, if you feel that your life isn’t what you want it to be. Whenever I need a reminder of how blessed I am just to be here, to have my health, to be loved, to have my whole life ahead of me, I read the last chapter of the book. It doesn’t just leave me sobbing because it’s heartbreakingly sad but also reminded of how thankful I should be of being alive. Because life is the greatest gift you will ever receive and in the end, it’s what you make of it. If Tessa can find happiness while dying what fools are we not to not find joy while living?

Cupcake Christmas tree figurines

This weekend I’ll begin with the Christmas shopping. I’m so excited! Especially about getting a white Christmas tree. I already have a black one but it’s only one meter tall so this year I’m getting a bigger tree. I first planned on getting another black one but then decided I’d try something new so white it is. I’ll only decorate it with black, white and a little silver since that’s the colour scheme of my living room. Except for some pink cupcake ornaments. Just look at the one to the left. It doesn’t fit the colour scheme I had in mind but how can I not buy it?! They’re all very pretty but I really want to keep the colours to a minimum in my tree so if I’m going to put something other than black, white and silver in it it will have to be just one colour and not too much of it. Too bad I can’t fit the tree into my kitchen because in there the walls have the prettiest baby pink colour and I would just love a Christmas tree full of pink ornaments. Or even a pink tree!

Speaking of something a lot more serious. A woman was assaulted in the small forest in my neighbourhood. I take the bike road though that forest at least once a week so I was pretty freaked to hear about it. Apparently the attacker tried to drag a woman from the bike road up into the woods but her dog attacked the man who then ran away. It happened around noon, in broad daylight! Guess how scared I was when I took the bike through that forest today at dusk. I’ll never do that again. From now on if I need to go that way after dark I’ll take the bus.

The vampire shelf

I have these standing in one of the compartments of my book case. I did not intend to make it a vampire compartment but a few days after I placed the apple candle next to the Tru Blood bottle I realized that’s what it is. Because an apple is the symbol for Twilight and Tru Blood, well it’s True Blood.

Lusekofte for the win

Last weekend I walked in a Halloween parade but of course I forgot to bring my camera so I don’t have any photos of me in my pirate costume. I’ll dress up in it just for photos some time though because I really want to show you how arr I looked in it. This is the fourth time I’ve dressed up for Halloween. I’ve been Wednesday Addams, a dark fairy, Siouxsie Sioux and now a pirate. Next year I’ll do the headless bride costume I blogged about a while ago.

Fall is passing by quickly and this year autumn doesn’t feel as bad as it usually does. I still loathe the season with every fibre of my being but I manage better than last year. Probably because city life is full of distractions. The busier I am the less I notice how early it gets dark, how cold it is and how depressing the trees look without their leaves. I’m also trying to embrace the season by lighting candles in the evening and taking long baths once in a while. Those things which just aren’t as cosy in the summer. A thing which definitely is positive about fall is being able to wear my pretty winter clothes again and buying new clothes suitable for the season. Below you can see my latest finds. I just love the lusekofte (traditional Norwegian sweater) ripoffs you find everywhere in the stores this year.
