The oldest site layout I have saved on my computer is from 2002. Looking through my old layouts it’s obvious I favour some colours over others. For the past four years I’ve only used monochrome, pink and blue in all of my site layouts. Before that I was a bit more varied. Here are the number of times I’ve used different colour themes for my site since 2002. Even the slightest bit of a colour here counts as the layout being of that colour theme since most of my layouts are monochrome with just a splash of colour as accent.
Looking at my old layouts I feel that everything I made before 2011 sucked. Everything made before 2009 sucked big time. The layouts pre 2005 are pure embarrassment. I’m actually thinking about taking down the entire Whirlwind Archive where I display my old layouts because I’m ashamed to be associated with the fugliness of my early web design. Have a look at it yourself. Would you want to be associated with some of those things? And I’m not saying that to get pity compliments. It’s not strange that stuff I did ten years ago seems horribly outdated and ugly now. As with everything web design improves with time and has trends which comes and goes.
A while ago I got this vision of a pink and turquoise layout with a cupcake. Since I according to myself isn’t good enough at making digital art for my vision to be realized I bought stock images for the layout. I’m in love with this concept. Do you get a 50s retro vibe from it? That’s the feeling I tried to catch.
I haven’t checked how it works in other browsers than Opera yet but it should be fine in everything but old versions of IE. I’ll fix that tomorrow.
I’ve finished the revamping of the 2011 and 2012 ego galleries with self-portraits. The new galleries are a lot easier to navigate and also looks better. What do you think?
I’ll work my way through the rest of the 827 photos dating 2000-2010. It’s going to take me a while. Weeks, probably. I really hate revamping the galleries. I’ve done it a couple of times, the last time two years ago. Hopefully after I’m done with this I’ll be happy with the new way of organizing things for at least a few years.
I haven’t got the time to blog since I’m working on a huge revamp of all of my galleries. Click on any of the images in the Art & Design gallery and you’ll see what I’m doing. My gallery now uses a script which enlarges the image when you click it rather than taking you to a separate page to see a bigger version of the thumbnail. Me like. Revamping all my galleries will take forever though. The Ego gallery holds close to 1000 photos so I have no idea how long this will take.
I really like this layout. A lot more my style than my last one. Monochrome once again. The plan was actually to make an autumn layout in red, orange and yellow with autumn leaves in the header but as you can see I changed my mind.
What do you think?
I’m working on a new layout for Whirlwind. It’s going to be rather simplistic since I quickly got tired of looking at my messy desk layout. I like it because it’s different from everything I’ve done before but that’s also the reason I dislike it. This isn’t my style.
I have nothing more to say so I’ll leave you with this photo I took today. Autumn in my parents neighbourhood.
Et voila, a new layout! I realize desk layouts are pretty old and that the professional web designers did this type of design like five years ago. Still I wanted to try my hands at it myself even though it’s a pretty old concept.
As usual, after having stared at this layout for days while working on it, I’m already sick of it. I’ve been working on it for eighteen hours straight and before that maybe another eighteen split over a couple of days. Just finding the stock images took probably five or six hours. The only photos which aren’t stock are the wallet and mouse, those are photos of my things.
Input? Also, let me know if you find any errors.
I’m working on a new layout for Whirlwind. So far it’s going well and I think it’s going to look awesome once it’s finished. As usual when I design a new layout I started with a rather vague concept which evolves through the process. In other words I’m not one of those who make a sketch of a layout and then create a layout looking exactly like the sketch. I’ve always been like this when it comes to web design. It’s a creative process and I never know where it might lead me. I considered posting a sneak peak image of the layout but since I’m not at all sure what I have now will look anything like the finished product I decided not to. You get to see the layout once it’s 100% finished. I’m not sure when that will be. Maybe in a week, maybe in a month. Depends on how much time I can spend working on it every day.
I realize my blog has become rather shallow with very short entries lately. That’s because I’m busy but still want to blog. The solution is short entries with not much more than a photo. At least that’s better than not blogging at all. I also write a lot of entries at once and then schedule them to be posted one by one, once a day at 6 PM. All entries from the past couple of weeks posted at 6 PM are ones I’ve written earlier and scheduled to be posted later.
Since I haven’t got much more to say I leave you with a photo, as usual.
I made a new layout. A remake of the previous one. Just changed the colours and images. I took the advice of a friend and made something which isn’t monochrome or pink. Yes, I can actually make layouts using other colours!
