How many of you are participating in Earth Hour, turning off your lights for an hour next saturday? I’m not. Why not? Because it’s a ritual which people participate in to feel good about themselves. All of those who usually don’t give a shit about saving energy get to feel good about “doing something”. What difference does it make? It will reduce the carbon dioxide emissions for one day but after one hour people go back to their normal way of life. What we need is long term goals for change. Not just a one hour manifestation.
I recycle, use very little electricity compared to most people, don’t own a car and try to eat as much ecologic, vegetarian* and locally produced food as I can. THAT’S what people should do. Not just turn off the lights for an hour.
* “According to a 2006 United Nations initiative, the livestock industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation worldwide, and modern practices of raising animals for food contributes on a “massive scale” to deforestation[2], air and water pollution, land degradation, loss of topsoil, climate change[3], the overuse of resources including oil and water, and loss of biodiversity. The initiative concluded that “the livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global.” – Wikipedia
