Of dishes, pink buckets and the walking dead

Today I’ve done nothing of interest. Unless something of interest is working, cleaning, doing the dishes, eating dinner (which I at least didn’t have to cook, thanks Andreas!) and then having a shower. All those things are only interesting in a weird parallel universe where people do the dishes for fun and work is the highlight of the day. I don’t live in that universe. Do you?

Oh yeah, I bought a pink bucket and a pink mop. Not because I needed a new bucket and a new mop but just because they were pink. They match my bathroom. That’s not interesting either but it says a lot about my shopping habits and my apartments super strict colour scheme.

At least now I’m going to do something fun. Time to watch the latest episode of:

the walking dead

Battlestars, art and randomness

I’m watching Battlestar Galactica. I’m halfway through season three after having watched the series now and then for a couple of months. I won’t be able to “save” the rest of the episodes though, watching a episode once in a while, making the series last longer. Since I’m in the middle of my summer leave from work and my boyfriend isn’t I’m spending a lot of time alone and watching TV-series is something I do a lot when I’m alone. It’s such a shame only four seasons were ever made of BSG. I want more! I’m not a big fan of Sci-Fi but there’s always exceptions. Star Wars is one, so is X-Files and now also BSG. And oh my god I love Kara and Lee. I’m totally fangirling over their relationship going “aaaaaawwwwwww!!!!” whenever they’re cute together. If I ever did a cosplay I’d do Kara. I don’t look anything like her, except for maybe a similar nose, but it would be a cool cosplay anyway because she’s so badass. If I was into cosplaying that is.

Other than that, I’m trying my hands at photomanipulating. I’ve never been all that into photomanips except for the horrid blends I used for site layouts a couple of years ago. Now I’m giving it a serious go though and I think I’m doing pretty well for a total manip newb. If you want to see the things I’ve made look here and here. Obviously I’m still learning but I’m pretty pleased with my learning curve.

Oh look. I’m writing about what I’m doing during my days. I don’t do that often. That’s because I think no one would be interested in what I do. Because this is pretty much it. I don’t go to a lot of concerts or parties, I rarely travel and the city I live in isn’t all that exciting. Provided I had enough food I could easily spend a month not leaving my apartment. I rarely get bored because almost all of my hobbies are indoor hobbies best done in solitude. I can spend days working on art or web design. Or reading a good book. Oh well, not days reading one book perhaps considering I easily finish a book in just one day, but you get the picture. Then there’s TV-series and movies. Not to mention home decor projects and cleaning. Yes, I actually enjoy cleaning. I love a clean apartment. It makes me feel accomplished. What else do I do? Work out on the treadmill, have dinner at the balcony, randomly surf the internet for hours. I do leave my apartment once in a while though. I have a job, I do enjoy geocaching and love shopping. But most of my time I spend at home. That’s why having a nice home is so important to me, with me spending so much time in it.

Oh well, this turned into quite a long entry. Sorry if I bored you. I assure you though, even though my life may sound boring, I’m happy with it. Even when I was a little girl I could spend days in my room working on my own little projects. I’ve never been someone who has to have people around me and things to do 24/7. Anyway, another episode of Battlestar Galactica awaits and then it’s time to hit the sack.

Horror TV-series opening credits

I like supernatural TV-series about hauntings, vampires and all that jazz. Some of my favourite supernatural TV-series also happens to have amazing opening credits. Actually out of the opening credits of all the TV-series I love my top five all happens to be from horror TV-series.

Fear Itself

This is my new favourite intro. The horror imagery combined with the soft lulling song (Serj Tankian – Lie Lie Lie) together makes this a very creepy intro.

The vampire shelf

I have these standing in one of the compartments of my book case. I did not intend to make it a vampire compartment but a few days after I placed the apple candle next to the Tru Blood bottle I realized that’s what it is. Because an apple is the symbol for Twilight and Tru Blood, well it’s True Blood.

Of autumn, pirates and boredom

I wish I could escape the country for a couple of months, until like April, when spring is here again for real. I don’t understand people who find autumn “cozy”. This is my view and it doesn’t give me any kind of cozy feeling whatsoever. It just brings me down.

The only upside with this time of the year is that my favourite holiday – Christmas – is approacing. I also like Halloween and I’m excited for this years celebration since I’m attending a Halloween parade in Stockholm. I’ll be going as a lady pirate. I say lady pirate because my hat has lace and ribbons and my coat is purple velvet. It’s not one of those “sexy” costumes with a short skirt because I want to be somewhat historically accurate. Still, it’s a feminine take on the classic pirate clothes. The only thing I lack at the moment is shoes. It’s nearly impossible finding historically accurate pirate boots for women. It’s all high heels “sexy pirate vixen” stuff. Since I can’t find anything I decided what the hell, I’ll make bootcuffs for a pair of my high heel boots. It won’t be historicall accurate but it’ll go with the rest of the costume and it’s only for one day. I don’t want to buy something which is just “ok” so it’s better to wear something I already own and look out for really awesome pirate boots for next year.

Moving on. Today I’m bored. Me, bored! You don’t get how weird that is because usually I’m never bored. I have way too many hobbies and always some creative project going on. Unfortunately today I don’t feel like doing any of my hobbies and when it comes to creative projects I lack inspiration. Usually when I feel like this I spend hours and hours cleaning and organizing my home but not today. Everything is already clean and perfectly organized so there’s nothing to do there. If I had more money I’d bake something but I have no more than 150 SEK (€16, $22) in my wallet and that money which will have to last until the 25th. What do you do when you’re bored? Got any tips for me?

I’ll end this post with something funny. This is Agnes Nicole Winter, one of four women the Swedish Documentary TV-series Swedish Hollywood Wives follows. And she just happens to be the Joker’s lost twin sister.

Just read the damn subtitles

On the IMBD forums I’ve seen a lot of people in favour or American re-makes because they think they’re easier to follow than subtitled movies in the original for them foreign language. There’s also many countries (Most of central and southern Europe) that dub just about everything in another language than their native one. For me as a Swede I have a hard time understanding what they find so difficult about subtitles. Sure in some less developed countries where a large percentage of the population can’t read it’s one thing but when Americans prefer re-makes and French and Germans dubbed movies it’s just silly. Personally my reading skills were good enough to follow subtitles when I was seven and it’s been working well for me ever since.

I think it’s especially silly when people (Americans, it’s always Americans) complain about how it’s hard to follow a movie in a language they don’t understand with subtitles they do understand. Personally I think it’s harder to follow a movie in a language you do understand with subtitles in another language you also understand.

The things is no matter how good the subtitles are not everything can be accurately translated. Take humorous puns like this for example: “What did the grape say when it got stepped on? Nothing – but it let out a little whine”. Translated to Swedish the words “whine” and “wine” have no similarity to each other which means that directly translated the joke no longer makes sense. The usual solution to this is replacing the joke with a similar one. It works but when you understand the spoken English and get the joke it’s a bit annoying reading a completely different joke in the Swedish subtitles. That is what you could call hard to follow. Hearing one thing in one language and reading another in another language. Yet here in Sweden where almost everyone understand English we don’t complain because we’re used to this.

What do I want to say with this? That people who think subtitles makes movies hard to follow should think about how we do it in Sweden and how we manage well despite the fact that most of us understand both the spoken language and the subtitled one. Dubbing makes movies look weird and re-makes… well isn’t that just extremely unnecessary? Just read the damn subtitles.

27 year olds portraying 16 year olds

When I was a teenager it bothered me that the actors depicting teenagers in TV-series always were in their twenties. A show I watched a bit was Dawson’s Creek (I’m not proud of it OK?! &gt_&lt) and at the beginning in 1998 they were all supposed to be 16. The youngest of the actors playing the leads was actually 20 and the oldest 27! So here’s a show I’m as a teenager is supposed to identify with but yet they put a 27 year old in it? All it did was create these weird ideals of how to look which obviously were impossible to follow for most teenagers.

Now though, more than ten years later, I look at this in a kind of different way… You see I still enjoy TV-series and movies set in a high school environment. I might be 26 and prefer to watch movies about people my age but I can still appreciate something set in that environment because well, been there done that. I can relate because once upon a time in a not too distant past I was a teenager myself.

Not much have changed in the casting of actors for these series and movies in the past ten years. I have changed though. Now I’m very happy to see someone aged 27 playing a 16 year old because for obvious reasons I prefer to look at 27 year old guys rather than 16 year old kids. Take Glee for example. The character Finn is 16 but the guy who plays Finn, well he’s 27, my age that is. And damn he’s hot! And don’t kill me now Twilight haters but I think Rob Pattison is hot. Well at least in his vampire make-up. So he plays a 17 year old but in actuality he’s 23, not that much younger than me. Great!

I still think they should try to hire actors who are around the age they portray for a more realistic feel but I’m not really complaining any more. I’m glad they did choose Rob Pattison rather than a real seventeen year old. ;)

Post-apocalypse, a book and a hippie van

I’m spending the weekend at home since I’m in the mood for total isolation. Me, a bag of chips and a Jericho marathon. I just watched the first episode and so far so good. Since it’s a post-apocalypse show of course I had to watch it since I absolutely love those.

Some day I’m gonna write a book about a post-apocalyptic society. It might not be in a near future but some day. Being the book worm I am I think writing and publishing a book is one of the coolest things you can do. Way cooler than starring in a movie or releasing a music album. And as a writer you don’t really have to be a public person unless you want to. You’ll leave a mark on the world and if you’re really good you’ll be remembered long after your death, but you don’t have to live in the spotlight.

It’s a nice dream. A big dream. But I’ve always dreamed big. My own company, traveling the world in a hippie van, writing a book. At least I never lack challenges and I think that’s a very good thing.

I changed the colour of the site by the way. Do you notice the difference? I wanted something more vibrant. It’s not too bright is it?

Bubba klubba och kvackelibrankelfnatt!

There are kids tv-shows which you’ll always remember. For me Disneklubben and Disneydags are two of those shows. Disneydags (disney time) was a swedish version of The Disney Afternoon which aired pretty much the same cartoons.

Just as when it comes to Disney movies I think the Disney cartoons of the early nineties are much better than the ones of today. Of course that might not be the case in actuality because however young in mind I am I still can’t apprechiate a cartoon today in the same way I did almost twenty years ago.

Anyway, you guys remember Tale spin, Duck Tales, Rescue Rangers, Adventures of the Gummi Bears and Tiny Toons? Then there was also Quack Pack and Goof Troop but by the time those shows were aired I at least pretended I was too old to care about cartoons. Even though I watched a few episodes here and there early weekend mornings.

Out of these shows Duck Tales was my absolute favourite. I mean, a robot duck and a neaderthal, can it get any more exciting?! For a eight year old, apparantly not, since I still remember the exact voice of Bubba.

You know what? I’m actually gonna try to find Duck Tales online and re-watch a couple of episodes. I’m afraid I might be disappointed but actually I think I won’t be. After all, I still love Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and the Little Mermaid.

There’s something about things you loved when you were a kid. I still prefer the old Narnia movies to the new ones. That’s really not logical since I know the new versions really are better. At least when you look at the special effects, because the effects of the old movies are really, really awful. Still, there’s something about the old movies which the new ones doesn’t capture. The fact that Aslan looks like a stuffed lion stolen from some kind of wildlife museum in the old versions doesn’t bother me much since I thought he looked very real when I was seven. That’s what I grew up with and that’s what I love. No amount of CGI can change that.

Tv and me

I thought about tv-shows and how many popular tv-shows I don’t follow, like or never watched. One example is “Sex and the city” which is extremely popular. I’ve seen a couple of episodes but it’s not for me for one simple reason. I can’t relate to it, at all. Well it’s about a group of 30 something career women in New York. I’m 25, live in a small town and make less than 1000$ a month.  ”Friends” on the other hand is a show I love, and can relate to. Well at least the first seasons in which they’re single, in their mid twenties and stuck with dead end jobs. Just like me! The later seasons where they get careers, get married and have kids aren’t as great. Still love the show though because of the great humour.

And then there’s…. “One Tree Hill”. What can I say besides no fucking way! I do like a couple of tv-shows aimed at teenagers but those are only old shows like “My So-called Life”. And of course “Freaks and Geeks” because it’s focusing on well… freaks and geeks instead of hot, popular rich kids. I can’t relate to people like that because I’ve never been one of those people. I was one of the “art freaks” in high school. Or “flumestet” as we’re called in Sweden.

Another show I don’t watch is “Lost”. I think I might like that one but I’ve only seen a couple of episodes and it’s not really one of those shows which you can start follow without having watched all episodes. The plot is way too complicated for that.

Yet another show I don’t watch is “Ugly Betty”. A show focusing on people in the fashion industry? No thank you. The fact that Betty is a great character isn’t enough.

And then of course there’s the hospital shows like “Grey’s Anatomy”, “House” and “Scrubs”. What can I say? I’ve never been much for hospital shows.

Something I do like is criminal shows like “NCIS”, “Bones”, “The mentalist” and “Lie To Me”. The old school bang bang-car chase-macho action-shows I don’t like. I’m not interested in seeing the police in wild shootouts. What’s interesting is the investigations behind the crimes. Of these shows “NCIS” is my favourite because of the funny characters.

And the person who counts how many times I’ve used the word “show” in this blog post wins a prize. Nah, not really. I just realized that this is pretty poorly written but it’s 01:06 and I’m hungover. I feel like shit. Cow shit perhaps. Laters!
